Own a Home? THINK TWICE BEFORE Doing Any of These! – PART 1 OF 2

What might seem like a good idea at the time, often isn’t. Here are some common mistakes homeowners often make:

  • Wash Your Windows on a Sunny Day
Doesn’t a warm, sunny day seem like the perfect time to wash windows? It’s the worst time to do it as the sun will dry the windows way too quickly, causing smears. Instead, save this chore for a cloudy day.
  • Remove Your ONLY Bathtub
If resale value is important to you, don’t even consider removing your only bathtub. It will make your home harder to sell when the time comes. For those buyers who love a good soak OR need a bathtub to bathe little ones, both human and four-legged, a home with NO tub could potentially affect your home’s desirability to buyers.
  • Leave Your Kitchen Cabinet Doors on While Painting
If you’re considering painting your kitchen cabinets vs. replacing them, it’s SO tempting to leave the cabinet doors on while you paint them, as the project is very time-consuming. DON’T DO IT! Because no matter how hard you try, it’s not going to look good, at all!
  • Cover Your Dated Wallpaper with Water-based Paint
You don’t have to remove your dated wallpaper – simply paint right over it. But don’t do it with water-based paint. It can re-moisten the old wallpaper glue and cause it to peel right off the wall! Instead, use an oil-based primer, being sure to let it dry completely, and then apply your latex paint over it. This industry standard has been around for a long time and is recommended by the pros.
  • Put Starchy Food Down Your Disposal
Today’s garbage disposals can handle more challenging foods than earlier models, but starchy foods like potatoes, rice, and oatmeal still stump them. When they hit water, starchy foods clump together potentially clogging disposals and pipes. Instead, dispose of them in the garbage or, even better, your compost pile!
  • Change Your Mailbox Without Checking with Your HOA
Many Homeowner’s Associations have regulations in place to keep neighborhood elements maintained uniformly to help retain property values. It is also not uncommon that ANY exterior changes you wish to make to your home, such as painting your front door, replacing your roof and adding a pool, need to be approved by the HOA prior to any work being done.
